Concrete Strength and Modulus of Elasticity

ACI 318 values for common f'c

ACI 318 Formulas

  • Modulus of elasticity: Ec = 57,000√f'c (psi) or 4,700√f'c (MPa), normalweight
  • General form: Ec = wc1.5 × 33√f'c (psi, wc in lb/ft³)
  • Modulus of rupture: fr = 7.5λ√f'c (psi) or 0.62λ√f'c (MPa), λ = 1.0 for normalweight

Concrete Modulus FAQ

What is the modulus of elasticity of concrete?

For normalweight concrete ACI 318 gives Ec = 57,000√f'c in psi, or 4,700√f'c in MPa. For 4,000 psi concrete that is about 3,600 ksi (25 GPa), roughly one eighth of steel.

Which Ec formula should I use for lightweight concrete?

Use the general form Ec = wc^1.5 × 33√f'c (psi), with wc the unit weight in lb/ft³ between 90 and 160. In SI, Ec = wc^1.5 × 0.043√f'c (MPa) with wc in kg/m³.

What is the modular ratio n?

n = Es / Ec, with Es = 29,000 ksi for reinforcing steel. For 4,000 psi concrete, n = 29,000 / 3,605 ≈ 8. It is used to transform steel area into equivalent concrete in cracked section analysis.

What unit weight should I use for concrete?

Plain normalweight concrete is about 145 lb/ft³ (2,320 kg/m³). Reinforced concrete is usually taken as 150 lb/ft³ (2,400 kg/m³) for dead load.
