Beam Deflection Calculator

Calculate the elastic deflection diagram and maximum deflection for an idealized beam by supplying material stiffness and section inertia.

What this calculator helps you find

The beam calculator includes an elastic deflection diagram. Open the calculator, select the supports and loads, then enter Young's modulus E and second moment of area I in the Deflection properties control. Deflection depends on both the load model and the member's bending stiffness EI.

Relevant formula

For a simply supported center load: δmax = PL³ / (48EI)

Worked example

For a 10 m simple span carrying a center load, increasing the second moment of area by a factor of two halves the calculated elastic deflection, provided the other inputs remain unchanged.

Use results responsibly

Use this tool for idealized, static two-dimensional analysis and for checking calculations. Confirm units, sign conventions, supports, material properties, and applicable design standards before using results in a project. Review the assumptions and limitations and validation records.
