Centroid of a T-Section
Mediumcentroidscomposite sections
A T-section is made of a 100 mm wide × 20 mm tall flange sitting on top of a 20 mm wide × 80 mm tall web. Measured from the bottom of the web, where is the centroid of the whole section?
- A67.8 mm
- B50 mm
- C60 mm
- D72.5 mm

Answer: A. 67.8 mm
Flange: A1 = 100 · 20 = 2000 mm², y1 = 80 + 10 = 90 mm. Web: A2 = 20 · 80 = 1600 mm², y2 = 40 mm. ȳ = ΣA y / ΣA = (2000 · 90 + 1600 · 40) / 3600 = (180000 + 64000) / 3600 = 67.8 mm. The centroid sits nearer the heavier flange, above the 50 mm midpoint.
