Fillet Weld Design Strength
Mediumweldsconnections
Two parallel longitudinal fillet welds each have effective length 100 mm and leg size w = 6 mm. FEXX = 490 MPa. Use φ = 0.75, throat t = 0.707w and Rn = 0.6·FEXX·t·Ltotal. The load is concentric and parallel to the welds, both welds participate, and end returns are excluded. Base metal is adequate. Find the design weld-metal resistance.

Answer: B. 187.1 kN
Throat t = 0.707(6) = 4.242 mm; Ltotal = 2(100) = 200 mm. Rn = 0.6(490)(4.242)(200) = 249,430 N = 249.4 kN; φRn = 0.75(249.4) = 187.1 kN. Wrong: 93.5 kN counts only one weld; 264.6 kN uses the 6 mm leg as the throat; 249.4 kN is the nominal Rn without φ.
