Joint Probability of Two Events
Easyprobabilityconditional
Event A has probability 0.30, and given that A occurs, event B occurs with probability 0.60. The probability that both A and B occur is most nearly:
- A0.18
- B0.30
- C0.45
- D0.90
Show solutionHide solution
Answer: A. 0.18
The multiplication rule for dependent events gives P(A ∩ B) = P(A)P(B|A) = (0.30)(0.60) = 0.18. Adding the probabilities, 0.90, would answer a union question for mutually exclusive events and is the usual confusion here.
