Modified Puls Reservoir Routing Storage
Hardreservoir-routingmodified-pulsstorage
Modified Puls routing uses Δt = 600 s and 2S₂/Δt + O₂ = 2S₁/Δt − O₁ + I₁ + I₂. At the start of the step S₁ = 300 m³, O₁ = 0.5 m³/s, I₁ = 0.5 m³/s and I₂ = 1.5 m³/s. The storage–outflow rating pairs (S in m³, O in m³/s) are (300, 0.50), (450, 0.75), (600, 1.00), (750, 1.25); interpolate linearly. Find S₂.

Answer: D. 500 m³
Right side: 2S₁/Δt = 600/600 = 1.0, so 2S₂/Δt + O₂ = 1.0 − 0.5 + 0.5 + 1.5 = 2.5 m³/s. The rating is linear: O = S/600 (e.g. 300 → 0.5, 450 → 0.75). Substitute: 2S₂/600 + S₂/600 = S₂/200 = 2.5, so S₂ = 500 m³ and O₂ = 0.833 m³/s. 700 m³ uses +O₁ (1.0 + 0.5 + 0.5 + 1.5 = 3.5). 300 m³ drops the 2S₁/Δt term (right side 1.5). 750 m³ ignores O₂ in the left side and solves 2S₂/Δt = 2.5 alone, which does not satisfy the rating curve.
