Precision Ratio of a Closed Traverse
Mediumtraverseclosure
A closed traverse with a perimeter of 800 m has a closure error of +0.08 m in northing and −0.06 m in easting. The precision of the traverse is most nearly:
- A1:4,000
- B1:6,400
- C1:8,000
- D1:10,000

Answer: C. 1:8,000
The linear closure is the resultant of the two misclosures: √(0.08² + 0.06²) = 0.10 m. Precision is expressed as the ratio of that closure to the total traverse length: 0.10/800 = 1:8,000. Adding the misclosures arithmetically instead of vectorially gives 0.14 m and understates the precision.
