Principal Stresses Under Pure Shear
EasyMohr's circlepure shear
An element is subjected only to a positive shear stress τxy = 40 MPa. The principal stresses are:
- A40 and 0 MPa
- B40 and −40 MPa
- C80 and 0 MPa
- D0 and 0 MPa

Answer: B. 40 and −40 MPa
For pure shear the circle is centered at the origin with radius τ, so σ1 = +40 MPa and σ2 = −40 MPa, at 45° to the x-axis.
