USCS Classification of a Clean Sand
MediumUSCSgradation
A clean sand has D10 = 0.20 mm, D30 = 0.50 mm and D60 = 1.20 mm. Its USCS classification is most nearly:
- ASW
- BSP
- CSM
- DSC

Answer: A. SW
Cu = D60/D10 = 1.20/0.20 = 6.0 and Cc = D30²/(D10·D60) = 0.25/0.24 = 1.04. A sand is well graded when Cu ≥ 6 and 1 ≤ Cc ≤ 3, so this is SW. SM and SC need more than 12% fines, and a clean sand has almost none.
