Aggregate Moisture Correction for a Batch
Mediumaggregatemoisture correction
A batch calls for 1,000 kg of coarse aggregate in the saturated surface-dry condition. The aggregate has an absorption of 2% and arrives at a total moisture content of 4%. The free water carried into the mix by this aggregate is most nearly:
- A10 kg
- B20 kg
- C40 kg
- D60 kg
Show solutionHide solution
Answer: B. 20 kg
Free moisture is the amount above the saturated surface-dry state: (4% − 2%)(1,000 kg) = 20 kg. That water must be subtracted from the batch water, or the mix will be wetter than designed. Using the full 4% moisture, 40 kg, double-counts the water already absorbed inside the aggregate pores.
