Average Compressive Stress in Masonry
Easymasonryaxial-stressnet-area
A concentric axial compressive load P = 120 kN acts on a masonry element. The net loadbearing area is 60,000 mm² and the gross area is 100,000 mm². No bending or slenderness effects are considered. What is the average compressive stress on the net area?
- A1.20 MPa
- B0.72 MPa
- C3.33 MPa
- D2.00 MPa

Answer: D. 2.00 MPa
σ = P/An = 120,000 N / 60,000 mm² = 2.00 MPa. 1.20 MPa divides by the gross area (100,000 mm²). 0.72 MPa takes the gross-area stress and multiplies it by the net-to-gross ratio 0.6 (the ratio should scale in the opposite direction). 3.33 MPa applies the net-to-gross ratio to the net area a second time (120,000/36,000).
