Max Moment from an Off-Center Point Load
Mediumbending momentpoint loadreactions
A simply supported beam spans 10 m. A 40 kN point load acts 4 m from the left support A. What is the maximum bending moment?
- A96 kN·m
- B64 kN·m
- C100 kN·m
- D160 kN·m

Answer: A. 96 kN·m
Reactions: RA = 40 · 6 / 10 = 24 kN, RB = 16 kN. Shear is constant (24 kN) from A to the load and crosses zero there, so Mmax is under the load: M = RA · 4 = 24 · 4 = 96 kN·m. Check from the right: 16 · 6 = 96 kN·m. 100 kN·m assumes the load at midspan (P L / 4).
