Shear at the Quarter Point of a Beam
Mediumshearbeam analysis
A simply supported beam of span 8 m carries a uniformly distributed load of 10 kN/m over its full length. The shear force at the quarter point, 2 m from the left support, is most nearly:
- A10 kN
- B20 kN
- C30 kN
- D40 kN
Show solutionHide solution
Answer: B. 20 kN
Each reaction is wL/2 = (10)(8)/2 = 40 kN. Moving 2 m in from the support, the load shed along the way is (10)(2) = 20 kN, so V = 40 − 20 = 20 kN. The value 40 kN is the shear at the support itself, where it is greatest; shear falls linearly to zero at midspan under a uniform load.
