Shear Modulus from E and Poisson's Ratio
Mediumelastic constantsshear modulus
A material has elastic modulus E = 200 GPa and Poisson's ratio ν = 0.30. Its shear modulus is most nearly:
- A62 GPa
- B77 GPa
- C100 GPa
- D154 GPa
Show solutionHide solution
Answer: B. 77 GPa
For an isotropic elastic material the three constants are linked by G = E/[2(1 + ν)] = 200/[2(1.30)] ≈ 77 GPa. Forgetting the factor of two gives 154 GPa; note that G is always well below E for ordinary structural materials.
