Slenderness Ratio of a Steel Column
Easycolumnsslenderness
A steel column is 4 m long with an effective length factor K = 1.0 and a radius of gyration of 50 mm. Its slenderness ratio is most nearly:
- A50
- B80
- C100
- D200

Answer: B. 80
Slenderness is KL/r, with both lengths in the same units: (1.0)(4,000 mm)/(50 mm) = 80. Mixing metres with millimetres is the usual error and gives either 0.08 or 80,000. A slenderness of 80 puts a typical steel column in the inelastic buckling range.
