Support Reaction at B of a Simple Beam
Easyreactionsmoments
A simply supported beam spans 10 m between supports A (left) and B (right). A single 20 kN downward point load acts 3 m from A. What is the vertical reaction at B?
- A6 kN
- B14 kN
- C10 kN
- D20 kN

Answer: A. 6 kN
Take moments about A so RA drops out: ΣMA = 0 → RB · 10 − 20 · 3 = 0 → RB = 60/10 = 6 kN. Then ΣFy = 0 gives RA = 20 − 6 = 14 kN. The reaction is larger at the support closer to the load.
