Column Load from Tributary Area
Mediumtributary areacolumns
An interior column supports a floor in a regular grid with bays 6 m by 8 m. The uniform floor load is 5 kPa. The axial load delivered to that column from one floor is most nearly:
- A120 kN
- B150 kN
- C240 kN
- D480 kN

Answer: C. 240 kN
The tributary area of an interior column extends halfway to each neighbour, giving the full bay area of 6 × 8 = 48 m². The axial load is then P = (5 kPa)(48 m²) = 240 kN. Taking only a quarter of the bay would describe a corner column, not an interior one.
