Support Moment of a Cantilever Slab
Mediumcantileverslab
A cantilever slab projects 2 m from its support and carries a uniform load of 6 kPa including self-weight. Considering a 1 m wide strip, the bending moment at the support is most nearly:
- A6 kN·m
- B12 kN·m
- C18 kN·m
- D24 kN·m

Answer: B. 12 kN·m
For a 1 m wide strip the load is w = 6 kN/m. A cantilever with a uniform load over its whole length has a support moment of wL²/2 = (6)(2)²/2 = 12 kN·m per metre of width. Using wL²/8, which applies to a simply supported span, would understate the moment by a factor of four.
