Shear Force Calculator

Generate a shear-force diagram for an idealized beam and see where concentrated and distributed loads change internal shear.

What this calculator helps you find

Shear force changes abruptly at a concentrated load. Under a uniform distributed load, the shear-force diagram is linear; under a linearly varying load, it is curved. Compare the diagram with the applied loading and support reactions to check equilibrium.

Relevant formula

dV/dx = −w(x)

Worked example

A centered 10 kN point load on a simply supported beam produces a positive constant shear of 5 kN before the load, a 10 kN downward jump at the load, and negative 5 kN afterward.

Use results responsibly

Use this tool for idealized, static two-dimensional analysis and for checking calculations. Confirm units, sign conventions, supports, material properties, and applicable design standards before using results in a project. Review the assumptions and limitations and validation records.
